Gardening: A Brief Background

What exactly is gardening? In broad terms, it is the practice of growing and taking care of plants, i.e crispy wave fern. Fruits, herbs, vegetables, shrubs, you name it and gardening covers it. What differentiates it from farming is the scale, and the intent to sell the produce (i.e. gardening — no, farming — yes).

It dates back to prehistoric times when people began to cultivate food-producing vines so they would have easier access to food. Eventually, these evolved into elaborate ornamental gardens kept for the wealthiest individuals. This dwindled off in the middle ages when people started to grow herbs in their gardens.

Later, some Europeans started to cultivate gardens both for food and beauty. And as time went on, gardens started to take on an informal, natural look- similar to ones we have today.

Now that you know a little about its background, let’s go into gardening as a hobby.

Gardening has indeed skyrocketed due to the pandemic. And why wouldn’t it- we are all cooped up in our homes. And most of us want to divert our attention from the endless cases we see onscreen. Aside from that, however, it’s also a source of so many positives.

For one, gardening requires movement (i.e. shoveling, digging, etc.), and can be considered as light to moderate exercise. It can also improve the mood, reduce stress, and is a great tool to break or recover from addiction. Gardening can also make us feel accomplished, and make us look forward to the days to come. Furthermore, it can lower blood pressure, increase Vitamin D, provide a sense of community- you get the idea.

We know you must be pretty knowledgeable about plants by now. But here are planting hobby quotes, and of course, I love gardening quotes as your final step to plant motherhood (or fatherhood for my dudes out there).
